Until the privatization wave of the 80s, the provision of electricity, natural gas, oil and fuel oil in Turkey was under the strict monopoly of public institutions, namely the Turkish Energy Institute (TEK). In parallel to the move for privatization, relevant government agencies put into force a number of laws and secondary legislation with a view to regulating the sector. These legislations constitute the Turkish energy law as it is today. Legal disputes in the field of licensing, pricing and administrative sanctions are quite common.
